From the Center for American Women and Politics, statewide in 2023:
"Decisions are being made in all levels of government which will directly affect women and children for years to come," said Monica Woodson, GSSEM CEO. "This program series encourages young women and girls to be active participants when and where those assessments are being made."
Democracy & Me Day was held at Newlab Detroit, in the Book Depository on Michigan Central's campus. The day included breakout and mentorship sessions, and Girl Scouts earned a badge for their participation.
The GSSEM and MWC collaboration is designed to educate and inspire young women to become more informed and involved in government. Programs produced from the partnership include a virtual speaker's series, in-person events, and a mentorship program, with potential job shadowing and internship opportunities. Topics covered over the series include Inside Government – discover how laws are created and how to be an active citizen; Public Policy – learn about public policy and how to become advocates and Behind the Ballot – find out about the electoral process and the importance of voting.
"In addition to earning a badge, they'll learn how to get involved in government and positively impact their communities," said Dana Dew, GSSEM Director of Life Skills.
