Troop Leader FAQ

How do I lead a Girl Scout troop? toggle arrow
Girl Scouts is girl-led.

Your role as a troop leader is to help guide your troop members through their activities.

  • For younger girls, that means more structure and planning.
  • For older girls, that means understanding their goals and helping them get there—while letting them take charge.

Using a year plan is an easy way to start if you're a first-time troop leader.

Girl-led activities are the key element of Girl Scouting. When girls step up and take ownership of their decisions, they become confident leaders who make informed and empowered decisions—a valuable skill they'll carry throughout their lives.

How can I be a successful Girl Scout troop leader? toggle arrow
Girl Scouts isn't about sticking to a strict curriculum.

A successful troop leader brings a group of Girl Scouts together to try new things, have shared experiences, and reflect on what they've learned and how it may have changed them.

They guide Girl Scouts while they earn badges and awards or when they're simply having fun—all while allowing the girls to take the lead whenever possible.

What should Girl Scout troop leaders wear to meetings? toggle arrow
Comfortable clothing, appropriate for your activities, is the best.

Girl Scout t-shirts, available at www.girlscoutshop.com, are an effective way to make yourself identifiable to troop members, parents, and adults at your meeting venue. Some troops even opt to make their own apparel. Please visit www.gssem.org/brand for guidelines.

Another great option is to wear a troop leader vest. Your troop may choose when and where they want to wear their own vests to represent themselves as Girl Scouts. Appropriate times to wear their vests include field trips or more formal events, like a bridging ceremony.
