GSSEM's annual Cookie Gala has become one of the spring's most exciting and tasty fundraising events.
Cookie Gala is always highly anticipated and enjoyed by many. In past years, it's drawn more than 500 attendees, who enjoyed a night of tasting and voting for their favorite Girl Scout Cookie-based desserts—which were created by some of Metro Detroit's best chefs and bakers. Last year, however, the COVID-19 pandemic forced GSSEM to cancel Cookie Gala 2020 only one week before the event.
"COVID-19 continues affecting the region, and GSSEM is taking the cautious step of taking Cookie Gala 2021 virtual. "At first, we were all baffled about how we'd make something so dependent on people being in a room together as enjoyable virtually," said Marc Berke, GSSEM Chief Development Officer. "But we've got some amazing plans for making Cookie Gala 2021 a fun and engaging event that our audience can enjoy with family and friends safely at home."
Berke said the details of the virtual Cookie Gala 2021 are concealed for now, but he promises it will go beyond the typical virtual broadcast of talking heads in Zoom boxes on your computer screen.
"This event is designed for family and friends to safely gather around television screens, get drawn in by the chefs' creations, and be in on the fun, too! It's taste-o-vision come to life right in the comfort of your home!" Berke said Cookie Gala 2021 will be unlike any of the online events that have become the norm during the pandemic. Also, the competitive element between chefs will still be a part of the event as they compete for Judge's Choice and the Audience Choice awards.
Sponsorship opportunities for the virtual event offer a unique way for GSSEM to showcase its donors, including prime positioning during the virtual event. "Whether that's in the virtual broadcast, or directly in the hands of our Cookie Gala guests who are joining from their homes, this virtual event makes it possible for sponsors to connect with an even broader audience, still up close and personal, just not at an in-person gala." Berke concluded.
Cookie Gala is GSSEM's annual, signature fundraising event. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cookie Gala 2021 will be virtual. Sponsorships will support GSSEM in presenting this unprecedented virtual experience and raising funds to provide more girls in southeastern Michigan the amazing experiences only Girl Scouts can provide.

Support Girl Leadership Year-Round
GSSEM hosts two additional fundraising events in the summer and fall. Each event prominently recognizes sponsors who join the Girl Scout Movement to build the girl and women leaders of today and tomorrow.
Golf Classic "FORE!" the Girls
The annual Golf Classic "FORE!" the Girls golf outing raises funds to support GSSEM's Girl Empowerment Program (GEP) that provides Girl Scouting experiences to girls in communities where challenges to traditional troops exist.
Tough Enough Breakfast
The annual Tough Enough Breakfast event is held each fall to honor women and men whose careers and community service have designated them "Tough Enough to be Girl Scouts." Past honorees include Kimberly Gill, WDIV Local 4 Anchor, Amy Peterson, Co-Founder and CEO of Rebel Nell, and Rick Devore, Regional President for Detroit and Southeastern Michigan at PNC.
"Girl Scout research shows that Girl Scouts are more likely to have excellent grades, to choose professional careers like science, technology and law, and express hopefulness about the future than non-Girl Scouts. Girls who are Girl Scouts tend to be leaders in their communities," said Monica Woodson, GSSEM CEO. "Supporting GSSEM through our fundraising events offers sponsors an even broader platform to showcase their commitment to girls and women's leadership. We know that when girls and young women are championed and celebrated to be exactly who they are and purse their ambitions, they can change the world."
