Jaanaki Tarver, a GSSEM Girl Scout in Dearborn recently attended and successfully completed the Space Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, home of Space Camp®, Space Camp® Robotics™, Aviation Challenge® and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Official Visitor Center.

The weeklong educational program promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), while training students and with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and problem solving. Jaanaki completed a variety of requirements, including learning how to find Polaris and observing the night sky, learning about female astronauts and scientists, different types of telescopes, and naming the solar system planets.

Jaanaki built and launched a model rocket, helped design and construct a space station, and participated in simulated space missions. She also attended presentations about how astronauts live and work in space. While gaining knowledge about the future of spaceflight, Jaanaki explored the U.S. Space and Rocket Center museum to learn about space history and current events.

GSSEM would like to send a huge congratulations to Jaanaki Tarver on this awesome accomplishment! She is truly unleashing her inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)
