dteenergyfound

DTE Energy Foundation awarded GSSEM a grant in the amount of $30,000 so that girls can learn about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) through participation on GSSEM FIRST teams. The grant also supports the GSSEM FIRST EXPO, where girls display their robot and present on the research they conducted.

Each year, GSSEM engages girls to participate in Junior FIRST Lego League (JrFLL) teams (grades K – 3) and FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams (grades 4-5). The teams conduct research on the Space-Based Challenge topic announced by FIRST and create LEGO models to solve problems related to the Challenge. The FLL teams, who  have more extensive requirements - require teams to program autonomous robots to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game), and develop solutions to problems they have identified (Project). The teams display their projects and present on their research at the Anuual GSSEM/FIRST Expo.

The grant money provided by DTE Energy Foundation allows the girls to get hands-on STEM experience and they are able to use these acquired skills and experiences throughout their lives, including going into STEM-related careers.
