The May board meeting , held at the Port Huron Service Center, started with Senior Girl Scout Hailey Totten sharing how her Girl Scouting experience, particularly participating in the Governor’s Honor Guard on Mackinac Island, has helped her become a more confident leader.  Hailey’s short term goals are to complete her Gold Award and become a Scout coordinator on Mackinac Island for a summer.  When asked what types of things Council can do to help retain girls in Scouting, Hailey said communicating with girls through technology they use daily is key.

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays.   It was exciting to start the season once again watching Girl Scouts in America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade march down Woodward Avenue wearing green Santa hats!  Their synchronous routine was performed with smiles and enthusiasm despite the cold, ice, and snow.   Congratulations girls for winning the WDIV online contest for best-choreographed team for a second year!

The November 12 board meeting was held virtually.  Although planned for the Detroit Service Center, problems with the building’s heating system forced the last minute change. The meeting was conducted via conference call with board members and staff phoning in from various locations.  Everything went smoothly and we were able to effectively handle all business.

The new program year is off to a great start. I hope the availability of the new starter kits has proven to be helpful.  The board has also returned to its monthly meeting schedule.

Our April 10 board meeting started with a challenge –torrential rains and wind inactivated the phone system and Internet at the Flint Service Center. In typical Girl Scout fashion we improvised, using my cell phone to conference remote board members into the meeting.  Our Mission Moment presenter, Rachel Karyakose, accessed her presentation via cell phone to make her remarks.

Board Chair Corner – February, 2013
The February 12 board meeting started with Girl Advisory Board Member and Ambassador Kandis Johnson sharing her journey of Girl Scouting though pictures and a Power Point presentation.  Kandis used the Girl Scout promise and law as a theme to show how her 12 years in Girl Scouting has made her the confident young woman she is today.  The board was moved and inspired by Kandis’ stories of leadership, courage and service.
