2014 will mark our fifth anniversary as GSSEM!  As we begin the holiday season, I want to thank our girls, parents, volunteers and staff for your contributions not only this year, but over the past five, which have made GSSEM the exemplary council it is today.

GSSEM has come a long way since January 2009. Today we are a well-managed, financially stable council with a visible presence in all the geographic regions we serve.  We provide a wealth of program offerings at the council, community and neighborhood levels that support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and challenge our girls to Discover, Connect and Take Action.  We have an active network of volunteers and are finding new and innovative ways to engage alumni, corporate partners and professional women in helping us deliver program and interact with girls. Working in concert, GSSEM is furthering the movement, and helping to make being a Girl Scout in Southeastern Michigan a rewarding experience.

It’s been a year of positive change and enhancements at GSSEM. We have instituted many customer service improvements. From the smooth transition to an upgraded E-biz site, to the new and more easily navigable GSSEM.ORG with The HUB for members; the development of the troop organizer toolkit and parent guide handout, and the local launch of the ‘I Can’t Wait’ recruitment campaign, it is now easier for girls, parents and volunteers to do business with GSSEM.   We have continued to support the professional growth of our volunteers with Lead and Learns, and revision of Volunteer Essentials. We continued to promote and advocate for Girl Scouting through our best ever signature Cookie Gala and Golf Outing events.  Finally, while membership growth and retention remains a consistent challenge, we saw an increase in girl membership over 2012, and we look forward to even greater progress in 2014. The New Year promises to bring exciting times at GSSEM, including the opening of our new downtown Flint Service Center.

I am so proud of what we have collectively accomplished this year. I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday season.    Relax, enjoy and refresh.  I look forward to working with you in 2014.

Yours in Scouting,

Nancy Philippart
