Our May board meeting was hosted at the Port Huron Service Center.  The meeting began with Ambassador Girl Scout Claudia Edie sharing her Girl Scout experiences with the board. She commented that Girl Scouting has given her the opportunity to be her own person and experience new opportunities.

The board next approved a motion to enable greater flexibility for cash out of benefits for participants in a legacy council terminated pension plan.   We reviewed council dashboard metrics and our upcoming fund development initiatives.  Our next event is the annual golf outing on Monday, August 19 at the Elks Club in Grand Blanc, followed by the 5K Walk at the Detroit Zoo on Saturday, October 5, 2013.  So get out your clubs and walking shoes and join us to help support scouting.  Mark your calendar! We have also set the date for next year’s Cookie Gala. It will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2014.

The board concluded its meeting with an in-depth discussion on results of its annual self- evaluation survey.  This is an important tool used to evaluate how well we execute our duties of care, loyalty and fiduciary oversight, and the effectiveness by which we operate as a team.  There was excellent discussion and recommendations on ways we can continue to improve our performance as a board.

The board is taking a short recess, although most committees will continue to meet during the summer.  We will reconvene in August for a strategy session as we begin budget preparation.  The next board of directors meeting will be on Tuesday, September 11, 2013 at the Detroit Service Center. In the meantime, board members will be at the four upcoming celebrations recognizing our top cookie sellers and their families, and of course, many of us will be participating as speakers and facilitators at Camp Moxie.

In closing, I want to congratulate our 2013 Young Woman of Distinction, Blair Pellatt, along with all of our Gold and Silver awardees.  The work you have done in your communities to make a sustainable impact in the lives of others is truly amazing.  Kudos to all the girls who attended the Michigan Women’s Foundation dinner, and got to meet Governor Snyder!

Have a wonderful summer!  I will be back in September after the next board meeting.

Yours in Scouting,

Nancy
