Board Chair Corner – February, 2013

The February 12 board meeting started with Girl Advisory Board Member and Ambassador Kandis Johnson sharing her journey of Girl Scouting though pictures and a Power Point presentation.  Kandis used the Girl Scout promise and law as a theme to show how her 12 years in Girl Scouting has made her the confident young woman she is today.  The board was moved and inspired by Kandis’ stories of leadership, courage and service.

The board next focused on several council financial matters.  Financial statements for November and December of 2012 were accepted and placed on file, and motions were passed to approve a staff benefit plan and IRS form 990 for tax filing.  In keeping with our goal of financial transparency, the 990 form will be posted on GSSEM website.

The Annual meeting on Saturday, March 23 is quickly approaching.  The board reviewed feedback from the Delegate Assembly meeting held on January 26 and approved the slate of nominees and officers for election at the annual meeting.  The Cookie Gala is also imminent – taking place on Wednesday, March 27 at a new venue – the DTE Headquarters building.  The board reviewed the status of the event, and members were encouraged to submit Tough Cookie Leader and Community Service award nominations. We want to use the Cookie Gala as an opportunity to honor women in our community who uphold Girl Scout values, so please submit your nominations by Feb 15.

A main focus of the board meeting was to discuss strategies and short and long term plans to increase membership, engagement and participation in Product Sales.  Although girl and adult retention is high, we have much work to do to recruit new members at every level of scouting.  Much discussion focused on strengthening the series and event pathways, engaging more professional women in these pathways and reinstituting the school troop organizer position in the volunteer structure.  Staff goals, and support of achieve these objectives were also discussed.

Finally, the board discussed the 2013 council calendar of events and committed to increase our attendance at the Volunteer Recognition luncheon, Gold and Silver award banquet, cookie celebrations and Camp Moxie.  Board members will once again sponsor and accompany Gold and Silver awardees to the Michigan Women’s Foundation Leadership Awards dinner on April 29.  We also had the privilege of approving 51 volunteers for national recognition at the April 13 Volunteer Recognition luncheon at the San Marino Club.

There is no board meeting in March due to the Annual Meeting, but the board will resume meeting on April 10 at the Flint Service Center.  I look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 23 at the First United Methodist Church of Troy.  It will be a wonderful opportunity to share council progress, conduct the business of governance and celebrate the conclusion of our 100th Anniversary of building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.

Yours in Scouting,
Nancy
