Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan (GSSEM), like many Girl Scout councils across the country, must make the tough decisions about underutilized, costly properties and programs. For years, our members have expressed, through their comments and participation, the desire to have camping and outdoor education that is less costly and closer to home. What’s more, as girls’ interests evolve so must hallmarks of the Girl Scout experience like outdoor education.

Field trip! Whisked away from Hawthorn Hollows, the first stop was at the Oakland County Commissioners Auditorium. There, the girls had the opportunity to hear from 3 local women mayor. Each leader brought a particular facet of knowledge to the campers. Mayor Lee of Brown City stressed the importance of “doing your homework”; it is all right to not know an answer right away and to rely on your team for support.

The second day began with a bang! Her name was Devita Daivison. A hush fell over campers as she began her presentation. “We may have a long way to go [but] we are going to get there”, she said, laying down a challenge for the girls to “dream bigger”. For Sadie Brubaker, she promises to answer Devita’s call by not giving up, even if you’re frightened.

The most exciting part of the new GSSEM website will be the Volunteer Toolkit! The toolkit will make running troops easier and more convenient for troop leaders. Troop leaders will be able to:
•    Manage Troop information and preferences all in one place
•    Communicate easily with parents through email
•    Use pre-populated information (Year Plan, Activity Details), saving time and improving quality
•    Interact with Troop Leaders through digital communities

The New GSSEM Calendar

The new GSSEM website will be much more user-friendly, and easier to search. You will be able to view events in calendar view, which will include a short, pop-out description.  You can also find events and activities in list view, which you can expand for full details.
